Trying to reverse the damage that people have done to our own planet will be a very long and difficult process. National Geographic states that there are about 5.25 trillion pieces of trash in our ocean and this is all due to littering and using plastic. It takes about 450 years for plastic to degrade and many take about 1000 years. There are many companies that have tried to make plastic into many things that are useful in our community. Many things are needed to help our oceans to save those creatures who live in them.

The USGS ( U.S. Geologic Service) gives facts that the ocean covers more than 70% of the worlds surfaces and is a crucial part of our everyday life. Oceans create more than half of our oxygen as well as absorbing carbon from it. Without our oceans we would barely survive. One single person would need to be around 300 plants for them to get the right amount of oxygen. It would be so difficult for humans to live without oceans.

Boyan Slat is the CEO of The Ocean Cleanup and has raised more than $30 million which will help clean up the ocean. Mr. Slat and his team members have discussed many ways to help clean up the ocean without hurting those animals that live around all the garbage. The Ocean Cleanup is a foundation that develops technologies to extract plastic pollution from the oceans and prevent more plastic debris from entering ocean waters.

As people who live on the crust of the earth we should be held responsible for taking care of it in the way that it takes care of us. In order to do this we would have to to start doing our part in our own communities and once we get better at that then and only then will we be able to do the same all over the world.

There are already many people that have created companies that have recycled plastic and have used it to do many things. OceanCycled is an instagram account that sells jewelry made of recycled plastic. Their motto is “Trash to Treasure” and they donate 10% of their sales. By recycling plastic they help animals like sea turtles, one of the biggest predators for sea turtles is plastic in the ocean.

We should all care about the earth and help it be beautiful in every form because without it we would not even be close to where we are today. Caring for our planet by picking up a piece of trash that you see while walking to your car or even just recycling water bottles makes a huge difference. By recycling water bottles you can help keep the planet clean and you get a bit of money so it’s a win-win.
